Adoption Stories

We wanted to let you know how Asher is doing. We renamed him Ezekiel or Zeke for short. He has adjusted well. He follows us around and loves our son Caleb. He is getting used to the sounds of our house and around the neighborhood. He is also getting used to be around new people. He doesn't like male dogs when we are out walking but doesn't mind females at all. He is showing us who he is each day. He climbed on Mary's lap the first morning he was with us. He also did not have any accidents overnight. He did however mark his territory in the house a couple of times but it is understandable as he may not have ever been in a house before. Attached are some pictures that we have taken of Zeke the last 2 days. We will continue to send pictures and keep you up dated as to how his is doing.

Thank you,
Scott & Mary F.

This email was from a family that adopted one of the kittens here at the shelter. They would email us and give us updates, always funny to read. Here is just a sample.

I know how much you loved Monte and I can understand how it was hard to give him up! I like to update you on him because you being his original "mom" and me being his adoptive "mom," you can truly appreciate how special he is. My words don't justify how special he is. So please know that you could not have picked a better family for him! I know I am sounding silly, but there is just something about him! Anyone coming here for the first time, always has the same reaction toward Monte (remember, I have 7 other cats). People are just immediately drawn to him, and he to them! Did I mention we had a birthday party for Monte? Of course, the kids blew out the candle for him! And yes, I took pictures!

Thanks,
Patti

While working for the town of Ossipee as their ACO, I had dropped off several dogs at LRHS. One day while I was dropping one off, I noticed a black dog in the far outside pen. She was barking her head off, I stared at her trying to figure out where I knew this dog from. I didn't give it another thought, I dropped off my ACO dog and left. Over the next 4 weeks I had to drop off a couple more dogs, and that black dog was still there. On my last time dropping off an ACO dog I recognized her, she was the sister of one of my own dogs DAH!! thats why she looked familiar. I asked the staff at LRHS why she was here, they said she had been dropped off as a stray and no one had claimed her. They called her Windy, but as I went over to the outside pen I said hey Daisy and she stopped barking and stood there and wiggled all over. I asked if anyone had been interested in adopting her, the staff said no.

I left the shelter and thought about it all day. I got Windy/Daisy's brother when he was 4 week old, and I knew what a love bug and a very loyal dog he was but I had already had 7 other dogs. I was in a delema, I felt bad leaving her there and knowing she had been there for so long. I went back the next day and picked her up and took her home, she fit in like a glove, like she had always lived there. That was back in September of 2008. She is indeed just like her brother, loving and loyal. We go for walks every day, she never leaves my side.

Thanks to LRHS keeping her safe until I took her home.

Hi,
First of all THANK YOU for the wonderful care you gave me at the humane society.

I sent you a picture of me in my new home. I really like it here, there is lots of room to run and play and we have "kitty TV". My new mom and dad put a bird feeder outside the window for us to watch. As fun as it is, I can't seem to catch those birds. I try, I jump high but never get them .

Mom and Dad talked with everyone they know I think and all of them voted on a new name for me . I think the daughter in California is responsible for me being called Walter. They all seem to like it, I am still trying to get used to it. I guess it really doesn't matter what they call me as long as they love me. I get too many kisses each day ....yuck....well actually I like them.

I go to work with Dad (he has an office in the house). I help Dad type all his e-mails, I am not sure why sometimes he says 'scat kitty', maybe I don't spell as well as he does. And I already have mom wrapped around my little claw. See that picture....its her chair I am in, and she leaves me there....go figure.

The only one that I am am still trying to impress is that grey tiger cat. I think she just likes to hiss. She is not as mean as she pretends to be. When the parents aren't looking we get along and play.

Thank you for helping me find this new home where I am loved and well cared for.
Walter (aka Checkers)

Dear LRHS workers and volunteers,

Pete's arrival (we've renamed him Pierre de Ronsard, but Pete for short) was dramatic, but more on that in a later email. The afternoon of our return we took Pete to the vet at Sagamore Animal Hospital where they know us well. The vet looked at his incision, thought it was a little red and "oozy" as she said. Pete is now on antibiotics and when not with us he wears a cone (all night long when he's sleeping in the cage). Aside from that problem, he passed his physical. Thanks to you we had no charge for the office visit; we paid only for the antibiotics and new collar for his tags. They gave me the cone. Even though Pete has a new collar, I still use a halter to walk him, but not the one he came with as it was too tight on him; he only wears the halter when we go out.

Yesterday, we got Pete a name tag at Petco where we also got a coupon book given to us because we adopt from a humane society. His dog treats were free, and he has already learned their location! We also licensed the dog with the city of Portsmouth, and sadly had to remove our other dog Lance from their list of dogs living in the city. So it appears that Pete is health and legal.

Thanks for letting us have Pete. I think we going to enjoy this adventure.

Here are some pictures of Tyler and Coolidge's first night at their new home! Tyler is checking out the sleeping arrangements and Coolidge is already hard at work on the laundry! Tyler slept in bed with me last night and the dog! and Coolidge slept with my 4 year old, Georgia, curled up by her feet. There are doing great and we love them!!!!

Thank you!

Hello to all!

Just wanted to thank you all for all your help in the adoption of my new baby! "Honey" or Daisy as we call her is doing wonderfully!!! She went to her first vet visit last Saturday and has already lost 2.3 pounds since her adoption 7 days prior. She did end up having ear mites, contrary to her prior vet visitation, but ear drops should clear that up soon.

Daisy is very happy. She continues to be on a weight control plan, walks regularly, and is limited to one small treat daily. She loves our kids and is often smothered with kisses and love! She has learned her place in our family and has already begun protecting our 6 year old from the excitable, 1 1/2 yr old lab who walks the area regularly. He knocked her over and began licking my daughter's face and Daisy ran him out of the yard quite quickly with his tail between his legs, but still stopped and came back the first time I called her name! She is a wonderful addition to our family!

Thanks again to Colleen, Ethan, and all those who helped out with my li'l Daisy girl! We love her very much and are very grateful to all of you who helped us find each other.

Hi:
Here's a photo of Lina (formerly Kerri) (on the bottom) hanging out with her older sister Moxie during a recent vacation. They are now getting along very well. Thought you might get a kick out of it.
Thanks.

I just wanted to update you on Bubba. He is still doing great.
Thank you so much again for letting me adopt him.

Hi Linda and everyone at LRHS,

Here are some pics of the two girls. They are doing great. Little Bear is very affectionate and cuddly, as well as playful. She is quite bold with the dogs and the other two cats who already live here. She loves exploring the house and getting into everything. Its great to have a curious kitten around again!

They now have a very nice covered bed which is big enough for two, so they spend time keeping each other company when I'm at work, safe in their "kitten proof" room. They both like to be up high, but also safely "out of sight". Its also very easy to visit them this way. Sure beats trying to sweet talk Pretty Girl when she is under the dresser!

Its interesting to see how Pretty Girl notices that Little Bear feels comfortable with humans. When Little Bear is purring and being petted, Pretty Girl is less afraid and will come partway out of her bed to get food.

Pretty Girl is doing really well with her "taming sessions" on my lap. Of course she is not yet volunteering to be there on her own, but she does not panic so much when I pick her up now, and once she is in my lap, she relaxes quite well, even grooming herself after eating. I think this canned food is very effective at inducing trust. They just love it!

Take care,
Fondly,
Sue, Little Bear, and Pretty Girl

Hi to all !!

As you can see Garrett has become very comfortable in his new home. He thinks he is a lap dog. He just can't get close enough to his "Daddy." Recently we took Garrett on his first camping trip. What a good boy he was. Actually better behaved than most of the other dogs in the camp ground.

Garrett presented us with his share of challanges but, with help from a trainer has become such a good boy. Garrett just wants to be loved and belong. I think this is true of all dogs. Once he understands what we expect from him, he is so willing to please. Time, love, patience and consistency does work wonders.

Garrett has also grown since we brought him home at 87 pounds. He is filling out and now weights 106 pounds. Our Vet says he is perfect. His weight is where it should be and he is healthy. He had no concern about his hips. So I believe we are looking at a long and healthy life for him.

Thank you for taking such good care of him until we adopted him. He has been like a breath of sun shine for my husband who has had to retire because of disability. Garrett has helped him through some tough emotional times. They have bonded so deeply because they need each other. It is so true that pets are the best therapy to help you heal as they love you unconditionally.

Take care and God Bless you all who care so much about these unwanted animals.

Hi Folks,
Attached is a photo of Bonnie of the infamous Bonnie and Clyde pair. She is patiently waiting for me to return with water for the chickens.

We love her and we're all so happy we have her with us. She is doing really well and seems very happy.

Thank you for everything,
The Lawlesses

Dear Friends..
We never reported back to you but its been 10 years ago... Dre is still with us. he has had a great life here in Gilmanton Iron works, NH. we have had two kids since he came to us.

We still remember when he dunked his little 1 1/2 yr old head to the bottom of the bucket of water and stole my husband'e heart at that second. He is in excellent health too! He is a gental giant and watches over our family.

He's traveled to VT and NY to see my inlaws and responds great to other dogs! We would love to think about adopting another one ... we'll keep you updated on that.

We attached a picture of him with our daughter taken last year. Thank you for all you do with the animals!

Sincerely,
The Gagnon Family

Dear Staff,

Two weeks ago today I adopted Tang and Pretty Girl. Upon arriving home, Tang hid under a bed while Pretty Girl began a persistent but cautious inspection of her house. After about 20 minutes, Tang started to explore but verrrrrry slowly. Pretty Girl played with some toys and used the scratch box; Tang looked on, mostly. He mainly wanted to be petted and purred loudly until bedtime. Both ate well and used the litter box with the hood off. Pretty Girl ate as if she had not eaten in days! She, also, scarfed up kitty treats, whereas, Tang showed no interest. During the night I periodically had a herd of horses galloping from one end of the house to the next.

The next day, after breakfast and a brushing of each, largely monopolized by Tang, he found a "hidden"corner and slept for, at least, four hours. This gave me a good opportunity to brush Pretty Girl. Jumping ahead, I have learned to use several grooming combs and brushes so that Pretty Girl's fur now stands out evenly, and she looks far less scruffy than originally. Since day two, her appetite has moderated, whereas Tang is the hungry one. He now enjoys kitty treats, as well. Both have explored closets, shelves, bookcases, and anything that is able to, even tenuously, support a cat. Surprisingly, they are careful to leave surface items undisturbed.

I soon discovered that neither recognizes their respective names. Tang is now catching on to his name. Pretty Girl did not, but at the urging of some cat-loving friends, I decided to call her by the name I liked, Esther, and she came as soon as I called her this! I am sure it was only coincidence, but she comes now when called Esther or Esther Ruth.

They both are settling down to a routine, although this continues to evolve. They sleep on the bed with me and take turns, it seems, with the closest positions to me. They spend some time apart: on their selected window ledges, the two chairs each has chosen, or in hide-away corners. Both play with all the toys together or with me, and both enjoy being brushed. They only play "tear through the house" in mid-morning and late afternoon.

Tang remains very gentle and sweet. Esther has learned to bat him away when he tries to monopolize the attention. After several days, it became very apparent that she never looked at me nor had she purred. Yesterday, Esther finally started to make eye contact and has initiated some "conversations"with me by looking at me and softly meowing. I will keep working on the trust/security issue and hope to hear her purr sometime in the future.

They are a delight in my life. Thank you for taking them in and caring for them so well.

Jaye Hays

Hello,

Here are some pictures of Marley. As you can see he is adjusting to his new life so well. We couldn't ask for a better dog!! He has done well with the cats (as you can see from the pics) and he just loves the kids!!

We are so thankful to have found him. Thank you so much!!

The Way family

Galiath.......AKA Double G is taking to our family very well, We are happy to have him. Thank you for all of your help and enjoy the photos. He is very spoiled. We got him a pet kennel and he doesn't even go in it. He rides in the truck with us everywhere. I think he had too many milk bones today because he didn't eat his dinner. He is also going for his first vet visit Friday the 22nd.
Thank you again,
Amy G.

Shop cats are part of the team at American Home Gallery. When we lost a beloved gentle male cat Oliver from kidney failure, we were very sad. We knew that his companion Lickey, a cat we got from LRHS in 1997 would be lonely. We went to the LRHS website and started looking for a new buddy for Lickey. The new cat would have to like people, not be fearful of kids and like lots of activity. I thought an older cat would be great. There was “Smokey”, a 10 year old fluffy large male cat. Website says he likes other cats.

I selected him from the photo and description only. When I went to pick him up, he was put in the cat carrier and we were on our way. We had a nice chat in car on the way to Wolfeboro. Smokey didn’t make a sound, just listened. I thought, how perfect, not even whining or stressed in the car.

Brought him to my office in the back of the shop and opened the cat carrier. He came busting right out, tail up and ready for checking things out. Lickey wasn’t so sure about this huge fluffy cat. He tried to buddy up to her right away. She hissed and growled. That lasted for one day - that’s all. She showed him she was boss and he was fine with that. We call “Smokey” Sammy now. Sammy and Lickey are best buddies. Shop visitors love him and are impressed with his beauty. He gets lots of attention and will not shy away from a friendly hand that wants to give him pats.

When things are quiet Sammy and Lickey curl up on my desk under the halogen light to bake in the heat and groom each other. It is so wonderful to find such a delightful old cat that is perfectly content to adapt to new surroundings.

We are lucky to have LRHS in our community to care for wonderful animals until a forever home can be found.

Dear Volunteers and Workers at LRHS

Gerry and I wanted to let you know that Bonnie and her son Max (A.K.A. Angus) are doing very well. Bonnie has settled in now, it took a while and still can be honoery at times, but she has found her place and as you can tell just thrives on the attention she gets. She is wonderful dog and just loves to be petted and rub. Max, as you can see has grown into a brute. At 6 months he weighed in at 63lbs. and has doubled his size since. We estimate him to be about 100 lbs plus now. Both love to wrestle and when they get going get out of the way..... they actually push the couch around when the really get going. The family joke is we need to build a room on just for Bonnie and Max.

Both have even learned several tricks. They both shake paws and roll over on queue, it took Bonnie a while to be trusting enough to do this but she does it willingly now. Max along with shaking paws and rolling over crawls and sits up on his hind legs for us. Quite a feel for a dog this big. Both of them have their unique personality and bring many laughs and hours of enjoyment. We often say we don't own them they own us.

While we were originally looking for ONE small dog, when we visited Bonnie and then saw Max we fell in love. We couldn't resist those faces and both have proven to be a great addition to our family. We love them both and would be lost with out them. Of course my shoe budget has had to increase thanks to them, but we are slowly breaking of them of this bad habit. Thanks so much for allowing us the honor of adding Bonnie and Max to our family.

Tori and I wanted to let you all know at L.R.H.S. that Foxy is such sweet little dog and sooooo smart.

We both love her so much; she is a joy and great addition to our family. Thank so much for foxy, you do such a great job with all animals there waiting to be adopted!! Keep up the great work that you all do!!

Thanks again,
Dave & Tori Dansereau

We had a rough year. We lost four cats. It was so, so sad. Two of the cats were part of the family for 18 years. We were so lucky to have them for so long. One cat was 13 and died of cancer, too young, too fast. And the fourth cat was a stray we had for 5 years, but didn’t know his age and he died from kidney failure. We were left with two female cats, one sixteen and one that was three, and they don’t like each other at all.

Unsure if we should bring in a new cat because of the old cat. We thought she wouldn’t adjust or would be mad. But as time passed, things at home were quiet and each cat was living independently. I would go on to the LRHS website and read about cats. I even went and looked at the cats. All of the cats were friendly and hard to choose. I kept looking at Sonny. He had been at the shelter for ten months. His story was pathetic and the first photo of him didn’t do him justice. His description on the website was that he was fine with other cats, but likes quiet and is skittish. I thought that might work at our home. He would keep to himself, not try to take over and would be cautious.

We decided to take Sonny, a handsome five year old white cat with grey tail and two spots on his head. I picked him up on a Saturday. Linda suggested we keep him in a quiet place because he liked to hide and isolate himself. I figured I would need the whole weekend to pay attention to him and make him comfortable and relaxed. From what Linda told me I expected him to take a while to adapt.
Well, by Sunday evening he was tired of being in his own room. I opened the door and he started touring all around the house. He is a bit skittish when you walk too fast, or he hears loud noises but he never hides. Our home is quiet so he must feel safe.

Old kitty doesn’t seem to mind him, so we worried for nothing. The young cat is still a little miffed, but that is her personality. Sonny has peaked her curiosity and she has been interacting with him cautiously.

Sonny has settled right in. He wants to be part of the action. Photos show him spending time with us in the kitchen in the evening after work. Everyone has their own chair. Sonny is very sweet and very playful. He has found all of the cat toys and loves the toy that chirps like a bird. He has been very polite to the other house kitties and knows his place yet wants to socialize with them. He purrs loud and loves petting. He already let me clip his claws and didn’t flinch.

It goes to show that a cat that comes to shelter with wounds and a sad story can be a wonderful cat for a new family. He needed time to heal and LRHS provides all the time an animal needs. Eventually a forever home will be found. We are lucky that he waited ten months at the shelter until the time was right for us to find him.

Hello all at LRHS!

I adopted Chance, known by you as Jet, last January 2007. He was certainly a handful to start! I enrolled him in doggie daycare, which did wonders to curb his energy as well as socialize him! When he began he was afraid of the other dogs, now he tells them what to do! He is incredibly intelligent, and housebroke in a matter of days. He has learned lots of tricks, and enjoys doing them for everyone he meets. He learned to love swimming and now enjoys jumping off the dock at my parents lake house in the summer. His favorite winter past time is of course rolling in the snow. I have to drag him in like a little kid off a playground when it's time to come in! I am still so shocked that he was a stray, I can't imagine anyone not claiming him. Thank you all so much for taking such good care of him until he could come into my home. He is everything I was looking for in a dog, and some things I didn't even know I wanted! Keep up the good work, the animals are lucky to have you on their side!

S. Kenney

Here are a few pictures of Shelby and her new life. She is the sweetest dog Danny and I could ever ask for. Within the first week of having her she knew all of her basic commands, & now she loves giving her paw. She plays with her sister Madison on a daily basis, and the other little dog in the pictures is her best friend Lexi. She is the happiest dog, and we thank you for giving animals the opportunity for a better life.

Grace in Real Life

Thanks so much to everyone at the Lakes Region Humane Society for approving my adoption of Grace - one of the dogs that came from Georgia. She is truly the most gentle, sweet and friendly dogs I've ever known.

The first few days in her new home were somewhat strange for her, having lived at a shelter for almost 3 years. Her main concern was finding food in any shape or form, in every square inch of the house - as well as on her walks. Though she hasn't totally given that up, she is much more social, loves attention and affection, and is quicker to relax and take a snooze rather than sniff around for hours.

Her days begin and end with a good long hike. She now lives in a wooded area on a dead end dirt road with brooks and little pools for her to enjoy. Her housemates include two cats who just love her. While I'm at work Grace spends the days with friends who have a dog, three cats and two teen aged girls. It's the perfect situation.

Grace is due for her surgery on Monday May 12th and I'm looking forward to getting her back to her new home for recovery. Sincere thanks for all the fundraising which will pay for the operation. Grace is a very lucky girl having come to your shelter.

Thanks again for all your support, advice and for saving Grace!

Here are some pics of Little Bear (Melissa) an Pretty Girl (Etta). As you can see they are entirely at home here now. Pretty Girl the "feral" one, is the tamest, most loving cat we have ever had. She absolutely adores both of us, and spends as much time as possible cuddling with us. She follows us around the house and is very talkative. She really has almost no startle reflex left at all, and is in fact very bold and confident. Who would have predicted that?! Little Bear is doing great too. She is huge by now, as you can see, heavier than her buddy. She has recovered entirely from her spay, and her fur has grown in well, although it is not full length yet. She is as relaxed and loving as a kitten can be, obviously has a very "rag doll" type of temperament. They are still the very best of friends, always together. They both come eagerly if we call them, sit on our laps, play a LOT, and in all ways are very sociable with us, our two english setters, and the other two cats in the house.

Both of them look forward to when we retire to the bed, and within moments of us settling in, they are both there, curled up together and in some way in contact with us, purring away. They sleep almost all night there, until about 4 am, when they start galloping around the house ... "thunder kitties" we call them. It is extremely adorable.

I hope you relay our appreciation to all the staff, our thanks for the care you gave these two sweet babies, and most of all tell people that "feral" cats can really turn out wonderfully, so please hold out hope for any others like Pretty Girl. It did not take that long to tame her, although it did take a bit of persistence, and once she realized how good humans can be, she is trying hard to make up for lost time! If we can ever be of assistance to anyone else who adopts a feral cat, with encouragement or sharing what worked for Pretty Girl, please feel free to pass on my e-mail or phone number anything.

Sue and Doug, Little Bear and Pretty Girl

(Previously named Whitey and Squiggy now named Thelma & Louise, were left on the front porch of the shelter and they are now doing great in their new home.)

The cats are wonderful. They have made themselves at home as you can see in the pictures. They had their vet visit on Friday and other that being put on a diet, they are fine. They wander around marking their space and acting like they own the place but tend to hid under the bed when my grandchildren come over. I can't blame them for that. Otherwise they are very friendly and seem happy.
Thanks again.
